It stabilises fractious soil, such as clay and shale, by weakening the van der Waal forces so that when OMC is achieved and compaction takes place, a higher soil density of up to 100% can be achieved. This does not make the soil hydrophobic, but it creates an impervious flexible bond preventing water ingress and cracking as it is not brittle, (like cement stabilisation).
